Entrepreneur.com listed five famous business leaders who use meditation as a tool to grow their businesses. And so I tried it out of curiosity. I am now to report results.
Ray Dalio. This billionaire founder of Bridgewater Associates encouraged his 735 employees to practice transcendental meditation on a regular basis. In a Business Insider interview, Dalio said, "I did it because it's the greatest gift I could give anyone -- it brings about equanimity, creativity and peace." Since then, meditation practices have spread throughout Wall Street.
Jeff Weiner. The CEO of LinkedIn since 2009, Weiner has taken the social app's membership from 33 million to more than 430 million. Part of his philosophy for success, he's said, involves his appreciation for health, love and time. In the realm of "health," Weiner has acknowledged using an app called Headspace to meditate daily. He frequently recommends the app to his employees and partners.
Bill Ford. The executive chairman of Ford Motor Company, Ford takes time to meditate each day, no matter what. During his close call with bankruptcy nearly a decade ago, Ford admitted in a Harvard Business Review piece, "The practice of mindfulness kept me going during the darkest days." Meditation helped him improve his productivity but also to make decisions with compassion and kindness.
Marc Benioff (with Steve Jobs). Benioff, founder of SalesForce, recommends meditation to all aspiring entrepreneurs and meditates every morning himself before work. His practice started after he received a piece of advice from Steve Jobs to "be mindful and project the future," according to a piece in ZDNet. Benioff has said he also takes time to express gratitude, as another way to clear his mind at the start of the day.
Russell Simmons. Current chair and CEO of Rush Communications, Simmons is perhaps better known as the cofounder of Def Jam Recordings. A few years ago, he wrote a piece for Entrepreneur detailing his perspective on meditation and encouraging new and experienced entrepreneurs alike to build the habit. It's worth a read if you're interested in a first-person perspective on the matter.
I personally use Dan Harris’ 10% Happier app for almost 9 months as of publishing this article and the effect on me has been deeply positive.
(1) I observe that I have been more equanimous to the unexpectedness of business demands, allowing me to maintain a relaxed mental attitude despite the pressure.
(2) I also observe more clarity in my thinking and better readiness to fix problems.
(3) Generally, I sleep better or I get rested very easily. I also experienced general health. I normally get the flu several times a year. I only just had one this year!
(4) I also notice a certain impact on my diet. I get hungry less and eat healthy more. For some reason, I crave for coffee lesser now than before!
(5) In terms of personal income, I managed to grow an extra few thousands per month; highest at $20k in one month! I know that some entrepreneurs do grow revenue to the tune of $50k per day!
(6) And in terms of personal relationships, I seem to be annoyed less. (The 10% app teaches this technique for dealing with annoying people and situations.) I also get peer pressured less.
(7) You won't believe me, but I'll say it anyway. I feel more happiness and stable emotions. This does help in the lonely world of entrepreneurship.
If you are starting out in realm of meditation, I list below a few sources that got me started.
